The Michael Garden, adjoining the Michael Palace (also known as the Russian museum) is one of the most beautiful locations in St. Petersburg, Russia. In the past it has been functioning as hunting reserve, French Garden, nursery and then as a connecting route during Queen Elizabeth’s reign.
Emperor Paul used the garden as a place for horse riding. The garden was named after the Michael Castle. Today, it is the best place for relaxation and strolling around, quite away from the hustle and bustle of the city life.
History of Michael Garden
Michael Garden has a long history. It was initially a French garden, then served as hunting reserve, nursery and finally was a path which had fountains around. It also served as a horse riding ground. In 1819 the construction of Michael Castle started and then the Michael Palace. The garden is laid between two historical structures, the Michael Castle and the Michael Palace. After the Palace was constructed in the year 1825, the garden was converted into a beautiful park.

Features of Michael Garden
A small pavilion was built in the Garden’s north-eastern corner, towards the bank of river Moika in 1825. It was designed by Carlo Rossi in the Empire Style. The Tree of Freedom lies beside the pavilion. This tree is a symbol made from old oak and designed by the great sculptor Anatoly Solovyav.
About Michael Garden
Michael Garden was recently renovated and restored in the year 2002. During the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, it was opened to the public. At present, it is a great place to relax and retire after a hard day’s work by strolling on the green grass. During the summer and spring seasons, classical music concerts are also organized in this beautiful venue.

Michael garden can be reached easily from Nevsky Prospekt. The nearest metro station is Gostiny Dvor, from where you need to move towards Griboedov Canal. Walking by the side of the canal you will reach the entrance of the garden lying opposite to the Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood.
