Menshikov Palace is one of the oldest buildings in Saint Petersburg. This palace was named after first governor-general of this city, Prince Alexander Menshikov and is situated at Universitetskaia Naberezhnaia. This palace was constructed between the years of 1710 to 1716.
In the past, this palace building used to serve administrative as well as residential purposes. European architects have given design to this building. Some of the artists who actively participated in the construction work of this palace are Giovanni Mario Fontana, Georg Johanns Mattarnovi, Domenico Trezzini, Johann Gottfried Schadel, Eorg Johanns Mattarnovi, Carlo Bartolommeo Rastrelli and Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond.

The walls of the entrance hall are wonderfully decorated by the technique of scagliola. Menshikov Palace represents the unique western European and Russian architectural style. The rooms of this royal palace are decorated in Dutch style and its inner sides are adorned with silver, gold and marble.

During 18th century, this palace was used as a military high school. This school produced many military commanders. In the 1880's a museum was set up in this palace. In 1970's this palace underwent major construction work. In order to preserve this Monument, State Inspectorate took initiative to renovate this palace and finally in the year, 1981 the magnificent architectural edifice opened its door to the public. The used accessories of Prince Menshikov have been kept on display. From 10.30 am to 4.30 pm this palace building remains open to the public.
