Mariinsky Theatre, Saint Petersburg was established in the year of 1738 by Empress Catherine II. The theatre derived its name from the wife of Tsar Alexander II, Maria and was planned by the famous architect, Caves. Later on, during the 1860, the Mariinsky Theatre was turned into an Opera House that staged several ballets.
