Leningrad Zoo in Saint Petersburg is part of the Alexander Garden. This is the second largest zoo in Russia and is home to more than 410 species of animals. The Lenigrad Zoo was established in the year 1865 and is the result of the endeavor of Julius Gerhardt and Sofia Gerhardt. The total number of animals in the Leningrad Zoo is about 2000.
Entertainment in Leningrad Zoo
The tourists can closely watch animals of different species in their natural surroundings in the Leningrad Zoo. A part of the zoo has been segregated for holding circus. There are restaurants and cafes as well for the refreshment of the tourists. Also orchestras are played to entertain the crowd.
The administration of the Leningrad zoological garden was passed over to Ernst Rost on 1873. It was he who

had taken the initiative to make the entertainment section of this zoo in Saint Petersburg. There after animals, such as orang utangs, Indian and African elephants, giraffes and ant eaters were brought to the zoo. Ernst Rost had renovated many of the buildings and structures of the zoo as well.
Closing Down and Re-opening of Leningrad Zoo
The Leningrad Zoo, Saint Petersburg had incurred heavy damage after Ernst Rost left the administrative duties of the Leningrad Zoo, and especially so during the bombardment of the First World War. In 1909 itself, the zoo was closed down for the public, though the animals were still kept.
For the betterment of the park, Leningrad Zoo was nationalized in the year, 1918. The Leningrad zoo was so named in the year 1952.
