Kirov Plant History

The history of Kirov Plant dates back to 1932, when it was established as Krasny Putilovets Plant based in Leningrad. Set up as a tank design bureau of the Soviet military, it became the dominant tank manufacturer within 5 years. By 1937 Kirov Plant developed the IS and KV series tanks, and SU-152, SU-122, and SU-100 self-propelled guns. Workers were housed in apartments constructed close to the factory.

This factory also designed the T-80U tank with 1250 hp
turbine gas engine, and the T-72B tank. A 203.2 mm self propelled gun was also developed by this factory.

Kirov Plant in Russia

In 1991 the Kirov Plant in St. Petersburg was converted into a joint-stock company under the name of Special Design Bureau of Transport Engineering. It stopped producing military tanks in November 1991. It has emerged as a vertically integrated manufacturer of steam turbines and tractors. It is vertically integrated in the sense that it produces its own steel, sheet metal, stampings and forgings. The main principal component of the Kirov Plant is its metallurgical unit, the Kirovskiy Znamya Oktyabr Zavod. The steam turbines are used for both military and civil purposes. Along with General Electric, Kirov Plant is manufacturing turbines to be used in Gazprom pipelines.
