Izhorsky Zavod was established in 1722 as a manufacturer of ship spares on the request of Peter I. The company was named after River Izhora located nearby. St. Petersburg Izhorsky Zavora is now part of OMZ group, a conglomerate manufacturing heavy machineries for manufacturing, nuclear, power generation, oil, and mining industries.
Izhorsky Zavora of St. Petersburg merged with OMZ (Objedinennye Mashinostroitelnye Zavody) in 1999. The objective of OMZ is optimized utilization of available resources for raising business efficiency. OMZ has an employee strength of about 16,500.

OMZ is predominantly a heavy machine manufacturing conglomerate. It manufactures machineries for the power generation, mining, oil and natural gas, atomic, and manufacturing sectors.
Mining machineries - OMZ Russia is the leading producer of mechanized mining shovels in Russia. They also manufacture high-performance machineries for open-cast mines, and processing of minerals. They develop, commission and support all their machines.

Manufacturing Industries - For the manufacturing sector OMZ produces i) industrial cranes including portal cranes, overhead traveling cranes, metallurgical cranes, and cranes for special purposes; ii) equipments for drilling oil; iii) metallurgical products comprising heavy hydraulic press, sinter equipment, rolling mills, blast furnace machineries, and machines for continuous casting; iv) parts of thermal and hydro powered turbines; v) coke pushers, and coal loaders for coke industry; and vi) rotary kilns, rims, large shafts, and reducers for cement manufacturing units
Nuclear Power Plants - OMZ manufactures primary circuit equipments for atomic power plants using VVER-1000, and VVER-400 pressurized water reactors. OMZ is also capable of setting up 'nuclear islands' with power generating capacity of 1000 MW.
Special Steel - OMZ is specialized in manufacturing special alloys required in petroleum industries. It is the only Russian company to manufacture solid forged rotor blanks necessary in turbo generators and thermal turbines.
