Saint Petersburg History


Saint Petersburg history unveils everything about the historical and dramatic events of the city. Despite being a young city, Saint Petersburg has a rich history with full of mystery and myth. Saint Petersburg had celebrated its 300th anniversary on the 27th of May, 2003.

The city of St. Petersburg played an important part in the history of Russia. In its 300 years of existence, St. Petersburg experienced three different names. It also became the capital of Russia. Saint Petersburg has witnessed many famous and tragic historic events.

The Russian defeated Swedish force in the battle of Neva (Nevskaya Bitva) on 15th July, 1240. It was a dramatic fight for independence by the Russians under the leadership of Prince Alexander. As a consequence of the victory, Prince Alexander was renamed as Alexander Nevsky (Alexander of Neva). He was also announced as a Saint of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The city of St. Petersburg was established in 1703. Since its inception, it was an important center of domestic and international trade. On 16th May, 1703, the fortress on Zayachy Island was planted by Tsar of Russia, Peter the Great. In 1712, St. Petersburg
became the capital of Russia based on the will of Peter the Great. St. Isaac Cathedral was founded on 1818. It was one of the largest cathedrals in Russia and the 4th largest in the world. In 1837, the first Russian railroad Saint Petersburg Tsarskoe Selo was opened. The Russian Emperor, Alexander II was assassinated on 11th March 1881.

One of the most tragic events in the history of Russia is "Bloody Sunday". In 9th January (Sunday), 1905, Russian tsar Nicolas II dictated to shoot the peaceful demonstration of the people. The people were assembled on a demand for a better life conditions. In 1914, the name of St. Petersburg changed to Petrograd. On 25th October, 1917, the Bolshevik Revolution took place under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin. Lenin came to power and eventually in 1924, the name of the city again changed to Leningrad after Vladimir Lenin. In 1991, the citizens of the city voted to its original name and it again changed to Saint Petersburg.

Saint Petersburg was a land of mixed culture with different ethnic groups including Finns and Slavs. St. Petersburg maintained a good trade relationship with Northern and Western Europe. The trade was carried out through the river Neva and Lake Ladoga.
