Giacomo Quarenghi was a world famous architect of the 18th century. He was born in Bergamo, Italy in the year 1744. He studied painting from G. Reggi and P. Bonomini. While staying in Rome he studied under Anton Raphael Mengs. He also studied architecture with S. Poudo and worked successfully in Italy as well as in England.
Being invited by Catherine II, in the year 1779 he came to Russia along with his family members. Here he resided till his death. In 1805 Giacomo Quarenghi got the membership of Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts. In between the period 1788 and 1800 he worked as an architect of the Maltese order. For its excellent work he was awarded with the Russian nobility.

Giacomo Quarenghi was greatly influenced by the Palladian style of architecture which is reflected in his work. Apart from this, the improvisation in Neo-classical architecture and the works of English architects greatly impressed him. He designed the Catherine's palace and the palace of Alexander.

In the year 1779 Baron Grimm made Giacomo Quarenghi, the architect of the court of Russia. His remarkable works include Palazzo Jusop and Pharmacy court. In 1810 under his guidance several buildings were built in St. Petersburg. Giacomo Quarenghi died in St. Petersburg in the year 1817.
