Cruiser Aurora is a unique museum in Saint Petersburg. This museum is one of the popular attractions for those visiting the city. This historical war ship Cruiser Aurora was turned into a museum in 1952. This ship is docked in the embankments of Petrovskaia Naberezhnaia. The museum is open from 10.30am to 4.pm on all days except Mondays and Tuesdays. No admission charge is required to enter the museum.
History of Cruiser Aurora
Cruiser Aurora was built in the year 1897 in the shipyard of New Admiralty. The cruiser was named after the warship named Aurora that bravely saved the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski during the Crimean War that took place between 1853 and 1856. Cruiser Aurora was inaugurated on 11th May 1900. It was a part of the Russian Army since 1903 and participated in the Russian -Japanese war. sent to the dockyard during the later half of 1916.Cruiser Aurora has gained special importance in the history of Russia. The ship attacked the Winter Palace. It was awarded with Russia Central Committee's Red Banner in 1924. The ship actively participated in World War II, defending Leningrad. During the war it was greatly damaged and sent for repairs. It served as a special training ship between the year 1922 and 1940.
In the year 1952, Cruiser Aurora was converted into a museum. This Ship Museum was a part of the Central Naval Museum. The Saint Andrew Naval Banner was seen flying above the Cruiser Aurora in July 1992. This banner symbolized the naval power in Russia.
Features of Cruiser Aurora Museum
In this museum, there are more than 500 documents, ancient objects related to the ship's history and several photographs. For thrilling and adventurous visitors, there is an underwater excursion to the machine – boiler area.
