Cathedral of SS Peter & Paul in Saint Petersburg was built in 1704. The former building was constructed of wood and later the stone church was built in 1733. The present structure of Cathedral of SS Peter & Paul was designed by Domenico Trezzini. It took almost 20 years to set up the new structure of the church.
The style of architecture adopted for Cathedral of SS Peter & Paul was a deviation from the Orthodox churches where the traditional Baroque style was used. The architectural style of Cathedral of SS Peter & Paul resembles the Protestant churches set up in Western Europe.

shaped base of Cathedral of SS Peter & Paul are unique features of this cathedral in Saint Petersburg. The bell tower of the church was once destroyed by a fire. Later it was rebuilt following the order of Catherine the Great. One can see the figure of an angel with a cross on the needle of the church. The clock put up on the bell tower of the cathedral was bought from Holland. A new clock was put up in 1952.
Visitors to this cathedral can also see the paintings on the walls of the church that are based on different themes of Bible. Many stories from the Gospels are also represented through the paintings at Cathedral of SS Peter & Paul.
Peter the Great and many other rulers from the Romanov dynasty were buried in the premises of Cathedral of SS Peter & Paul. The graves of these rulers are major attractions for the tourists visiting Cathedral of SS Peter & Paul in Saint Petersburg. The graves of Elizabeth, Anne and Peter III are also located here.
