Arctic and Antarctic Museum is located in Ulitsa Marata area of Saint Petersburg in Russia. Arctic and Antarctic Museum was set up in 1930 but it was made open for the public after 7 years. It served as the department of All Union Arctic Institute during the initial years of its foundation. About 75,000 artifacts are put up on display in this museum.
The Arctic and Antarctic Museum in Saint Petersburg is located near the Nevsky Prospekt. Architect A. Melnikov designed this museum. Three of the four departments of the museum are kept open for visitors. Visitors can join the guided tours conducted by the museum authority. In 1950 the museum was re-opened for visitors.As exhibits from Antarctic expeditions from 1958 onwards were added to the Arctic Museum, it came to be known as Arctic and Antarctic Museum. The museum was declared to be The State Russian Arctic and Antarctic Museum by a decree of Government of Russia.
At the Arctic and Antarctic Museum in Saint Petersburg, several stamps and post cards related to the Polar expeditions are displayed. Numerous coins and medals are also put up as exhibits in the museum.
You can visit this museum during 10 am to 5 pm from Wednesday to Sunday. On Tuesday, Monday and on last Saturday of each month it remains closed. It is one of the mostly visited museums in Saint Petersburg. The metro stations of Mayakovskaya and Vladimirskaya are situated near Arctic and Antarctic Museum.
