Alexander Rodchenko


Alexander Rodchenko brought about a revolution in the field of photography. He took photographs from different angles and gave a new dimension to still photography. Born on the 5th of December in the year of 1891, Alexander Rodchenko began his career as a dental technician in Dr. Natanson's Dental School.

Alexander Rodchenko, The Painter And Photographer

Popularly known as Aleksandr Mikhailovich Rodchenko, Alexander Rodchenko was heavily influenced by the art works of Vladimir Tatlin, Kazimir Malevich and Wassily Kandisky. Alexander Rodchenko's paintings reflected Futurism and Supermatism. An ardent admirer of art and art works, Alexander Rodchenko proved his worth in different fields of photography, paintings, theatre designing and printing. His creativity found its expression in commercial paintings, expressive designs and photography.

Alexander Rodchenko became the Chairman of the
State Institute of Artistic Culture (INKHUK) and Museum Bureau and Russian Art Acquisitions Commission in 1921. He contributed immensely in the field of still photography. Alexander Rodchenko's mastery over still photography is portrayed in the life sized photographs of Dziga Vertov- the director, Lily Brik- the actress, Osip Brik- the writer and many other prominent personalities of Russia.

Last Phase of Alexander Rodchenko's Life

In order to popularize his innovative style of photography, Alexander Rodchenko published Against the Synthaetic Portrait, For the Snapshot in 1928. However, because of his pro-Leninist ideas, Alexander Rodchenko was deprived of many projects and was rendered jobless for several years. Alexander Rodchenko was accussed of bourgeois formalism . He had to give up photography and was regularly called by officials to prove his innocence. After spending the last years of his life in chronic poverty, Alexander Rodchenko passed away on 3rd December 1956.

Alexander Rodchenko is still remembered as an innovative photographer and renowned artist.
