Academy of Fine Arts Museum is one of the mostly visited museums in Saint Petersburg. Local people and tourists can visit the splendid exhibitions put up at Academy of Fine Arts Museum.
The Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts was also known as Academy of Three Noblest Arts. In 1757 it was founded by Count Ivan Shuvalov. Later it came to be known as the Imperial Academy of Arts as it was set up in a new location by the order of Catherine the Great. Alexander Kokorinov was appointed as the first rector of the Academy.
In 1933 the name of the Imperial Academy of Arts was changed to Russian Academy of Arts. After the Russian Revolution of 1917 some alterations were brought in the museum. In 1947 the name was again changed to Academy of Arts of USSR. It was decided in 1991 to give the museum its former name of Russian Academy of Arts. The headquarter of Russian Academy of Arts was shifted to Moscow in 1947.

The former building was transformed to Ilya Repin Saint Petersburg Academic Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Exhibitions are held in the splendid building that came to be known as the Academy of Fine Arts Museum.
From Academy of Fine Arts and Repin Institute many reputed artists have completed their graduation. The Academy of Fine Arts Museum in Saint Petersburg exhibits art works by students and the teachers of the institute. Visitors can also acquire knowledge about the history of the museum from the paintings put on exhibition. At the Titian Hall of the museum, temporary art exhibitions are organized at regular intervals. An exhibition is organized every year by the Academy which is held in Moscow.
It remains open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11 am to 7 pm. Only on Tuesday and Monday the museum remains closed for the visitors. Visitors can enter the museum after buying a ticket from the ticket counter.
