Nizhny Novgorod is the fourth largest city in Russia. It was founded in 1221 by Grand Duke George II of Russia, at the confluence of two most important rivers the Volga and the Oka. The name of the city literally means 'Newtown the Lower.' From 1932 to 1990, the city was known as Gorky, in honor of the writer Maxim Gorky. It is the economic and cultural center of the vast Volga-Vyatka economic region. Nizhny Novgorod is also the administrative center of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and Volga Federal District. The Muscovites regarded the city as a great stronghold in their wars against the Tatars of Kazan. The governor who occupies the highest post in the Region's executive heads the city government.
Area & Location:Located 56°20' Latitude North and 44°00' Longitude East, Nizhny Novgorod sits in the center of the region. It is surrounded by eight cities Dzerzhinsk, Balakhna, Zavolzhe, Bor, Kstovo, Bogorodsk, Gorodets, and Pavlovo. It occupies more than 74,800 square kilometers, which is larger than the space occupied by blend of Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands. The city is a home to 1,311,252 people.
