BUCHAREST

Bucharest is the capital of Romania. Founded by Bucur, a shepherd, the city has become an industrial and commercial center of Romania. The city administratively known as the Municipality of Bucharest has the same administrative level as a county. Bucharest is the only municipality in Romania, which is not part of a county. The elegant architecture and the sophistication of the city gave it the title, "Paris of the East" or "Little Paris". The city burnt down by the Ottomans in the 17th century, reincarnated and continued to grow in size and prosperity and became the most important trade center of Wallachia. It was placed under Russian administration between 1828 and the Crimean War and after World War I, Bucharest became the capital of Greater Romania. It is currently the most economically developed and industrialized city in Romania.



Area & Location: Located in the southeast of the country on the banks of the Dāmbovita River, Bucharest lies at 44°25' Latitude North and 26°06' Longitude East. The city is situated in the southeastern corner of the Romanian Plain The city occupies a total area of 228 sq. km has a population of 2,082,000.

Transportation: Bucharest has an extensive transport system, which is the largest in Romania. Bucharest Metro serves the city. The surface transport system run by RATB includes buses, trams, trolley buses, light rail, private taxi and minibus system. Henri Coanda International Airport and Aurel Vlaicu International Airport is the main access to the city for those abroad.

Bucharest is the hub of Romania's national railway network. The city has an extensive municipal road network with highways, express highways and roads. The construction of Danube Bucharest Canal is on the anvil and this will link the city to the Danube River.

Caragiale National Theatre, State Jewish Theatre, Comedy Theatre, the Nottara Theatre, the Odeon Theatre and the Constantin Tanase Revue Theatre that shows the performance of traditional arts are also interesting for the tourists.
