BRASOV

Brasov is a Romanian city and the capital of Brasov County. The city derived its name from the Pecheneg word barasu, which means "fortress". Earlier, when the city was a German colony, the German settlers denied several privileges to the Romanians. Later Jews lived in Brasov since 1807 and it became a home for a significant ethnic Hungarian minority.



Area & Location: Located in the central part of the country, about 166 km from Bucharest, Brasov is part of the Transylvania region. Located at 45°40' Latitude North and 25°37' Longitude East, Brasov has a population of 321,456.

Transportation: Brasov has well-developed local transportation system that makes it easy for the people to travel from one place to another. Buses, trolleybuses and trams are the main public transportation system in the city.

Nicolae (Saint Nicholas Church), The First Romanian School, Muzeul "Prima Carte Romāneasca- museum that exhibits the first book printed in the Romanian language, "Brasov Citadell Fortress" and Bran Castle that attracts the fans of Dracula are the important sites in the city which the tourists never fail to miss. Tāmpa a hill, which is located 900m above sea level, gives a spectacular view of the old city center. The Jewish synagogue with ancient artifacts also catches the eyes of the visitors.
