The city of Doha Qatar was founded in 1850 and named as Al-Biba. Later the city was names as Doha from the Arabic word "ad-dawha" meaning the big tree. The tree refers to a huge tree which stood on the original fishing village over the east coast of Qatar. Al Wajbah fortress was constructed in 1882 by al Rayyan in the southwest periphery in Doha. Later Sheikh Abdulla Bin Qassim Al-Thani tasted victory with the help of the Qatari army against the Ottomans.
In the year 1916, Doha Qatar has also been the capital of the British protectorate and continued to be so even after Qatar's independence. The oil-production in Doha in Qatar is almost 800000 barrels everyday. The Government House started functioning from 1969. The University of Qatar celebrates 1973 as its inaugural year.
Transportation system in Doha Qatar includes newly introduced bus services by the Mowasalat transportation company, a large number of taxis and flight services arranged by Qatar Airlines. However a large number of people in Doha Qatar own cars.
