PORTO

Porto is the second largest city in Portugal and the capital of Norte. The city is one of the most industrialized districts of the country. Portugal was named Portus Cale meaning Port of Gaia before its establishment. The city became an important industrial center during the 16th and 17th century. This increased its size as well as population. It is the cultural and administrative center of Grande Área Metropolitana do Porto metropolitan area. The city is well known for its enterprising spirit, characteristic culture, people and local cuisine. Being one of the most industrialized districts of Portugal, it is a modern cosmopolitan large northern Atlantic city.



Area & Location:Lying just to the north of a coastal Mediterranean climate zone that encompasses most of central and southern Portugal, Porto is located at 41º9' Latitude North and 8º38' Longitude West. Porto covers a total area of 41.3 sq. km. It serves as home to 238,954 people with density of 5,785 per sq. km.

Tourist Attractions: With many churches and monuments, the city of Porto has become a tourist destination.

Transportation: Porto is served by Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, which is situated 15km northwest of the city. It has the service of all direct flights to all major

cities of the world. Porto metro system is another facility that provides access to the city. The city also has an extensive bus network that has its operations in the neighboring cities. The tram network, taxicabs and road system are the other means of public transportation.
