As a public institution imparting higher education, the University of Lisbon was established in the year 1911, following the downfall of the Portugal's monarchical rule. However, the University of Lisbon has a long and ancient history, dating back as early as the 13th century.
Historical Facts about the University of Lisbon
The University of Lisbon was founded more or less in the 1200s as the Studium Generale or Estudo Geral by King Dinis. According to the history of the University of Lisbon, the university was relocated from Lisbon to Coimbra in 1537, after 250 years of its foundation. At that time, it was known as the University of Coimbra. Again in the 1900s, University of Coimbra was shifted to the Lisbon, and finally assumed the name of the Universidade de Lisboa.
