Lisbon Trade and Industry

Lisbon Trade and Industry has contributed to the growth and development of the economy of the city. The city of Lisbon is the richest region of Portugal. The per capita average of the city is more than European Union's GDP per capita average. 45% of the GDP of Portugal is produced by the city. The economy of Lisbon is primarily based on the tertiary sector.

Steel industry, soap making and munitions are some of the major local industries of Lisbon which have been operating since long. Recently, some other industries have also come up in the city like margarine manufacture, diamond cutting, glass making and electronics.

A vast number of the headquarters of multinational companies that operate in Portugal are established in the Grande Lisboa subregion, and are concentrated in the municipality of Oeiras. The Metropolitan Area of Lisbon is highly industrialized with special concentration on the south bank of the Tagus river (Rio Tejo). As per statistics in 1993, nearly 41% of the registered companies of Portugal were situated in Lisbon Metroploitan Area or LMA. 26% of the companies and 40% of the companies with a turnover more than 5 million Euro are located within the LMA.
Industries in Lisbon are primarily concentrated in two major industrial regions namely Lisbon-Setúbal located in the south-central region and Porto-Aveiro-Braga on the north of the city. Three-fourths of Portugal's total industrial output comes from these two regions. Some of the major industries that are located in Lisbon area are iron and steel; food and beverages ship building and repair; cement, oil refining, machinery, chemicals and electronics. Located nearly eighty kilometers to the southeast of Lisbon, Setúbal, has a huge shipyard, automobile assembly and machine industry plants. The area also has industries related to cement, fish processing, wood pulp and cork. A deep water port and heavy industrial complex is located at Sines, situated nearly 140 kilometers south of Lisbon. An oil refinery, petrochemical plants, and power plant producing 1,200-megawatt of electricity is also situated at Sines.

The petroleum refinery established at Sines is largely supported by the Government. The refinery has been established with a joint collaboration with Argus Resources of the United Kingdom. The project will be completed by 2010, and it is expected that its production capacity would be 250,000 barrels per day. Lisbon Trade and Industry plays major role in the the economic development of Portugal as a whole.
