The Technical University of Lisbon was founded in 1930 by the merging of 4 schools, which were the High School of Veterinary Medicine, the Higher Institute of Economic and Financial Sciences, the School of Agronomy and the School of Engineering. Later, between 1969 and 1979, the University was expanded with 3 new establishments for higher education. They were the Higher Institute of Physical Education, the Institute of Overseas Studies and the Faculty of Architecture.
The establishment of the Ajuda University Campus has been a significant event in the University's history. The new campus comprises the Faculty of Architecture, the School of Social and Political Sciences, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the Center of Physical Activity and Recreation and even has catering facilities. The campus is close to the School of Agronomy.
The office of the University's Rector has been housed in a 17th century building, since 1983. The building was actually a palace constructed by Queen Catherine of Bragança, known as Palácio das Açafatas da Rainha.
In the year 2005 the Social Services department of the University was shifted to Burnay Palace at Junqueira, which was the previous campus of the School of Social and Political Sciences. Some of the non teaching staff training programs and the masters were offered in this palace.

Currently about 3500 graduates and 19,000 undergraduates have got enrolled to the educational programs of Technical University of Lisbon. The total budget of all the schools of Technical University of Lisbon is nearly €170 million per year.
The College of Integrated Studies of UTL specializes in cross-disciplinary studies in several areas of both international and national interest.
The departments of Technical University of Lisbon are well organized and are controlled by the Rector. Each department has a proper mission and function. The departments are:

- Logistics and General Records Department
- Property Management Department
The University also has a Physical and Recreation Activity Center, Information Technology Office, Support Office, Social Services Office and External Relations Office.
