St Dominic's International School


St Dominic's International School is a well known school, located 25 kilometers from Lisbon. This private co-educational day school imparts education to students between the age of 3-18 years. Medium of instruction is English. The mission of the school is to offer international standard education by following the curriculum of the International Baccalaureate Organization.

History of St Dominic's International School

On the request of the English expatriate community, the Irish Dominican Sisters established a new school and named it St Dominic's College. This English medium co-educational school initially started with less than 20 students but expanded rapidly. Later, the new campus was established in the suburbs of Lisbon. The construction at the present site began in 1973 and the new school was opened in 1975. St Dominic's College was rechristened as the St Dominic's International School in the year 1988 and was officially registered by this name in 1995.

Curriculum of St Dominic's International School

The school follows the three IBO (International Baccalaureate Organization) programs: the Middle Years, the Primary Years, and the Diploma. It also
follows the rigorous assessment as directed by IBO.

The Junior School comprises of Nursery, Kindergarten and classes for children between 1-6 years. The subjects offered by the IB Primary Years Program are mathematics, information technology, English, physical education, Portuguese, Swedish, social studies, art, craft and music.

Children between 7 to 11 years follow the IB Middle Year Program. During this program students can choose from subjects like French, German, Swedish, geography, English language and literature, chemistry, natural economy (environment), ethics/philosophy, Portuguese, design technology, international studies, history, mathematics, computer studies/information technology, drama, biology, physics, music, art and craft, and media studies.

The curriculum for students between 12 and 13 years prepares them for the International Baccalaureate Diploma examinations. Highly qualified teachers from international locations are employed in the school.

The St. Dominic's International School in Portugal has been accredited by CIS (Council of International Schools) and NEASC (New England Association of Schools and Colleges). Children of nearly 53 different nationalities study in this school. The training imparted at St Dominic's International School focuses on the all round development of students.
