S.L. Benfica


Headquartered at the Portuguese city of Lisbon, the S.L. Benfica is a basketball team of Sport Lisboae Benfica on professional level. However, since June 2007, the decision of S.L. Benfica Basketball Team in Lisbon to leave the top professional LCB League and join the Proliga League for the 2007-2008 basketball season was heartily welcomed by sports lovers all across the globe. Known by the name of "Sport Lisboa" at the time of its foundation in 1904, the team assumed its present name in 1908, after being merged with the Sport Club de Benfica.

As the leading basketball club in Portugal, the Lisbon S.L. Benfica became the first team to win the European Champions Cup by defeating Real Madrid, the winners for successive years. S.L. Benfica also won the European Cup for the years 1961 and 1962 respectively. The team is also known to have participated in the 1982 UEFA Cup for the first time. The main competitors of S.L. Benfica include AC Milan in 1962 and 1989, Internazionale in 1964, Manchester United in 1967 and PSV in 1988.
