The reason for following this tradition is to get an ideal life partner, due to the blessings of Santo António. This is basically an occasion of festivity, characterized by jovial street parades, multi-colored ribbons, melodious music and aromas of basil and grilled sardines. The Santo António traditional practice includes a game as well, played on the eve of the main occasion.
