New University of Lisbon


New University of Lisbon or Universidade Nova de Lisboa in short is known as UNL/Nova. This university aims at developing the creative and innovative skills of the students. Established in 1973, this university is one of the youngest public universities of Lisbon, in Portugal. The university is located across three municipalities, namely Lisbon, Oeiras and Almada. It covers an approximate area of 60 hectares, particularly on three campuses - Campolide,Avenida de Berna and Caparica. These campuses are sited in various locations in Lisbon, namely Campo Santana, Junqueira, Lumiar and Oeiras.

The objective of creating this body was to initiate expansion and diversification in the field of higher education in the nation. The university received immense popularity ever since its inception. A recent survey shows that the present structure of the University comprises over 14000 students, 800 employees and 1500 teachers. Campolide campus is made up of Rectory Building and departments of Law, Statistics, Economics, Management Information Management. The other campus Caparica is devoted to the centers of Science and Technology. There are several locations across the city where some more teaching and research units are installed, such as Medicine, Public Health, Tropical Medicine, Technological Biology, Chemistry, Social Sciences and Humanities.

Other than higher education, this university is one of the best places to pursue scientific research within the city of Lisbon. Practical learning is encourages by
organizing various workshops related to different subjects. Presently, the education at New University of Lisbon is carried out in 5 faculties, comprising three Institutes and one School. Universidade Nova de Lisboa offers undergraduate degrees in nearly 40 subjects, masters degree for 65 subjects, PhD degrees for 20 subjects and postgraduate degree for 44 subjects.

The university features 49 research centers governed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. Several cooperative projects and exchange programs run simultaneously along with other institutions, business houses and universities at the national and international levels.
