The National Museum of Ancient Art is one of the best places in the city of Lisbon to witness some of the rare pieces of art and craft. The museum was actually a palace that was built by Count Alvor in 1690, where the Pombal family resided. The palace was later converted into a museum in 1884. The museum is often referred to as "Casa das Janelas Verdes" or the 'house of green windows', which is also the name of the street.

The art gallery of National Museum of Ancient Art exhibits extensive collection of Roman, Egyptian, and Greek sculptures and articles made of ceramic and porcelain. Tourists can have a close look at the intricate silver and gold work displayed in the museum. Some of the other articles exhibited in the museum are Gobelin tapestries, Indo Portuguese handicraft, vestments, carpets, Portuguese furniture and Namban works of art.
The collection of decorative arts in National Museum of Ancient Art comprises various articles made of gold, silver, wood and ceramic. There are about 3200 pieces of goldsmith work produced by Portuguese and French

artists between 12 and 19 centuries. The 1200 fine pieces of jewelry form one of the major attractions of the museum. One can also enjoy the artistry of 1700 pieces of furniture made in Portugal or other parts of Europe and the Far East. The collection also includes a diverse range of 7500 ceramic pieces of fine porcelain from all over the world and 4500 textile works.
The National Museum of Ancient Art has a huge collection of paintings by few legendary Portuguese artists like Domingos António Sequeira, S Vicente de Fora, Viera Portuense, Gregório Lopes, Pedro Alexandrino,Josefa de Óbidos and Francisco Vieira Lusitano. The works of some European painters like Van der Goes, Russel, Piero della Francesca, Lucas Cranach, Reynolds, Hieronymus Bosch, Largilière, Hans Holbein and Rigault, Lawrence are displayed in the museum.
National Museum of Ancient Art in Lisbon is open for visitors from 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm on Tuesdays and 10.00 am-6.00 pm from Wednesday to Sunday. The museum is closed on Mondays.
