The National Coach Museum is one of the wonderful tourist attractions in Lisbon that exhibits a huge collection of historical coaches. History of National Coach Museum
The Queen Amélia of Orleans and Bragança founded the museum in 1905. At that time it was known as the Royal Coach Museum. She knew that the ceremonial vehicles of Royal House were of great cultural significance to the country. She wanted the locals to see them and endeavored to create the museum with the support of several important people. The Royal Riding Arena of Belém was the site of the museum, where old aristocratic coaches belonging to the Royal House of Portugal were assembled.

The collection of National Coach Museum is absolutely remarkable and visitors can find all kinds of ornamental vehicles belonging to the royal family of Belém Palace, dating to the period between the 17th to the late 19th centuries. Originally, the collection of the museum included 29 vehicles, harnesses, dress uniforms and accessories of the cavalry, which were used by the Royal Family. The museum was named as the National Coach Museum after 1910, and then many additions were made to the collection.
The current exhibits of National Coach Museum are extremely unique in the world. The museum houses different types of coaches, chaises, berlins, carriages, litters, sedan chairs, cabriolets and children’s carts of the 17th to 19th centuries. Trumpets of the Royal Band, Portrait Gallery and oil on canvas of the rulers of the Bragança Dynasty are the other highlights of the museum's collection.
The latest exhibition of National Coach Museum was the one that commemorated 90 long years of the museum, the period from 23rd May 1905 to the modern age. Through this exhibition visitors learned how the museum evolved over the years and the important role played by Queen Amelia.
