Lisbon Mayors


The Lisbon mayors are pillars of local administration in Portugal. The Lisbon mayors are said to hold the highest position on municipal administrative level. Mayors of Lisbon are mostly the elected politicians, who handle the responsibilities of local government, along with other political activities.

António Luís dos Santos da Costa is the present Mayor of Lisbon. Born on 17th July 1961 in Lisbon, António Luís dos Santos da Costa rose to politics as an important politician of Portugal. Prior being elected as the Lisbon Mayor, he acted as one of the 14 Vice Presidents of the Parliament in Europe, since 2004. Just before he became the mayor, he was the Minister of Justice in the José Sócrates government. However, António resigned from all governmental posts to represent his party in the Lisbon municipal election, and won it on 15th July 2007.
Immediately after the creation of the post of Mayor in Lisbon, the Portuguese politician, lawyer and the former Republican President, Jorge Fernando Brancode Sampaio became the first Mayor of Lisbon. Born on 18th September, 1939, the bright political career of Jorge Fernando includes being elected as the Lisbon President in 1996 and assuming the office of the Mayor of Lisbon twice, in the years 1989 and 1993, respectively. The re-election of Jorge Fernando to the post of mayor only speaks of his efficiency and experience with which he very well handled the political conditions of Lisbon on local level during his first tenure as mayor.

João Barroso Soares (1996 - 2002), Pedro Miguel Santana Lopes (2002 - 2004), Pedro Miguel Santana Lopes (2005 - 2005) and António Pedro de Nobre Carmona Rodrigues (2005 - 2007) are some of the other Mayors of Lisbon.
