Being a private educational institution in Portugal, the Lusíada University came into existence in 1986, in the capital city of Lisbon, under the name of Cooperativa de Ensino Universidade Lusíada. Years after its inception, Lusíada University opened branches on national and international levels. While the local branches of Lusíada University in Lisbon are found in Portuguese cities like Vila Nova de Famalicão and Oporto, the international branches were opened in countries like Cabinda, Angola, Luanda and Benguela.
About Student and Faculty Strength
Presently, the Universidade Lusíada takes pride of its huge student strength, which is approximately 12,000. The faculty of the University comprises about 800 teachers, who are knowledgeable enough to enlighten the students and share with them their erudition, apart from the conventional classroom studies. In fact, the global reputation of Universidade Lusíada depends a lot on its knowledgeable and competent faculty.
Schools of Learning at Lusíada
Different schools in Lusíada University work collectively, towards imparting quality knowledge to both local and foreign students. At present, the following four schools are operative in the University, under the supervision of eminent professors, acting as their directors:

- School of Law
- School of Economics and Business
- School of Architecture and Arts
Presently, Universidade Lusíada of Lisbon has initiated a complimentary Portuguese language course

for foreign students, to make them thoroughly acquainted with the language. This is an intensive course, covering 5 days a week, with theory and practical classes, each of 4 hours duration.
Research facilities
The Lusíada R and D Institute or the Instituto Lusíada de Investigação e Desenvolvimento (ILID) was created by the University authority to support research works in various fields, with special reference to scientific developments. The research department of Lusíada University is supervised by the Chancellor, Rectors and Vice-Rectors, belonging to other reputed international universities. The base of the Lusíada R and D Institute houses 15 individual research centers, where people are engaged in innovating different undergraduate projects.
The University Library
The students and the research scholars of the Lusíada University derive their library facility partly from the European Documentation Centers and partly from the conventional libraries spread all over the campus of the University. These centers with their vast reserves of books and database, support the aspirants in gathering knowledge and apply them in their studies and researches.
Other important facts
Though there are no provision for hostels in the Lusíada University, yet the foreign students can stay in rooms available against payment of nominal rents, in private mansions, in the capital city near the university.
