Lisbon Local Government


The Lisbon Local Government is entrusted with a large number of responsibilities and functions that are related to the development of the community and the society as a whole. The Lisbon Municipal Council (CML) administers the capital city of Lisbon, which has the largest metropolitan population in Portugal. All kinds of public services, specially related to urban planning and construction are supervised by CML. The Council also takes care of the public water systems in and around Lisbon.

Responsibilities of Lisbon Local Government

Lisbon Local Government is responsible for taking decisions related to public security, traffic, road maintenance, sanitation and many other programs that play an important role in maintaining the quality of life in Lisbon. Some of the other responsibilities of the Lisbon Local Government are the development of the city, commerce, public sanitation, protecting the rights of youth and elderly, health, law and order, education, civil protection, culture and sport, and environment.

Administrative Divisions of Lisbon Local Government

The municipality (concelhos) of Lisbon is divided into wards (bairros) and parishes (freguesias). The representatives of parish assemblies are elected through local elections. The representatives then elect an executive body or the parish committee. The Municipal Assembly of Lisbon works as the legislative branch of local government. It comprises of representatives who are elected by their parish committees and members selected directly by the local residents. The Municipal Chamber of Lisbon, which is the executive branch of the local government, is elected by the Municipal Assembly. The president is the head of the Municipal Chamber is nominated by the district governor.

The Lisbon municipality comprises of 53 Freguesias. These Freguesias are governed by two local bodies; the legislative body (Assembleia Municipal) and the executive body (Cāmara Municipal). The Assembleia Municipal constitutes of 120 elected members and the Cāmara Municipal comprises of 16 members, which is headed by an elected council.

However, Lisbon Local Government has been consistently involved in making the city a better place to live.
