Historical Evolution
The origin of the Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (ISCTE) dates back to 1963, when it was created as an autonomous body from the Institute of Social Studies (IES), the Higher Institute of Labour Science and Enterprise. With the creation of the ISCTE, it was regarded as the first independent educational body of the University of Lisbon.

For the academic year 2007-2008, some new areas of specialization and degrees introduced by the ISCTE are:

- Specialization Course on "Introduction to the Common Law"
- Degree in Psychology
- Degree in Political Science
- Engineering, Telecommunications and Informatics
These new courses of ISCTE are of maximum 2 to 3 years duration, and examinations are held on semester basis.
