Lisbon Holidays


Lisbon holidays are awaited by the residents of the city as they can enjoy the holidays. Holidays in Lisbon are those special days when all the offices remain closed and people can stay away from work.

The important public holidays in Lisbon are:
  • January 1: The New Year's Day is the first holiday of national importance in Portugal. The New Year's Eve is known as Vespera de Ano Novo and is celebrated throughout the country with music, amazing fireworks. Normally, the people of Lisbon eat 12 grapes at midnight, when the new year is ushered.
  • December 25: Also known as Dia do Natal or Christmas Day, it is one of the favorite holidays of the people. It is celebrated by all families in Lisbon and in the country by burning a log of oak, so that they are blessed with good luck.
  • December 1: It is the Independence Day of Portugal and a significant national holiday. The day is celebrated every year amid parties and the display of fireworks.
  • 13 June: On this day St. António's Day or Festas dos Santos Populares is celebrated in Lisbon. As St. António was the saint of love, newly-married couples as well as singles in Lisbon pray to offer prayer for a safe and secure future.
  • Corpus Christi: This holiday falls on the 9th Thursday following Easter, either in the month
    of May or June. Corpo de Deus or the festival of Corpus Christi is marked by colorful with processions throughout the country.
  • November 1: It is a public holiday and is known as the All Soul's Day or All Saints' Day is celebrated. Various processions are conducted all over Lisbon and Portugal.
  • Easter Good Friday: It is celebrated on a grand scale in March or April.
  • June 10: It is known as Camoes or Community Day or even Portugal Day.
  • 25 April: It is Liberty Day and the revolution of 1974 is commemorated on this day. Generally it is celebrated with fireworks and parades.
  • 13 June: It is a religious holiday, when several pious devotees set out on a pilgrimage to Fatima.
  • October 5: It is a notable holiday as it is the Republic Day of Portugal. On this day, in the year 1910 the country was declared a republic.
  • 8 December: The 'Feast of the Immaculate Conception' is celebrated on this day.
The other national holidays of Lisbon are February 5 or Carnival, May 1 or Labor Day, August 15 or Assumption Day and December 26 or Boxing Day.

Lisbon holidays are the days when all the people of the city as well as the country take part in joyous celebrations and merrymaking.
