Colégio Militar, Lisbon


Colégio Militar is one of the most famous military schools of Lisbon, Portugal. During the invasion of Portugal by Napoleon's army in 1803, this college was established by General António Teixeira Rebello. It was initially located at S. Juliăo da Barra Fort, in Oeiras. For the first time the college was shifted in 1814 to a former hospital-convent in Luz. During the first years of its establishment it moved twice before finally relocating in 1859 in Luz.

A number of former students of Colégio Militar have contributed in several fields like science, arts, politics and war. They have set high examples of true patriotism in the country. Some of the eminent personalities who graduated from Colégio Militar, Lisbon are:
  • Humberto Delgado who was the Air Force General and Presidential candidate of Portugal.
  • António de Spínola who was the Army Marshall and President of Portugal.
  • Gomes da Costa was the Army Marshall and President of Portugal
  • Júlio Dantas was a legendary dramatist, politician, doctor, poet, journalist and diplomat.

Teaching at Colégio Militar is imparted through both military and civilian teachers. Sports enjoys a very prominent place in the curriculum of Colégio Militar. Students can participate in various sports like gymnastics, fencing, shooting and horse riding.

The children of both military personnel and civilians can get admission in the Military College. The school is only for boys, but the faculty comprises of both male and female teachers. Students can take admission in the school in their fifth, sixth and seventh year and should be eleven, twelve and thirteen years of age respectively.

Colégio Militar in Lisbon is the premier military school in the country that has trained innumerable successful people of the region.
