Chiado

Chiado is among the popular tourist attractions in Lisbon and also one of the busiest areas in the city. Chiado is a quarter, located to the west of Baixa or downtown Lisbon, on a slope of land that connects the upper and lower portions of the city.

It is very interesting to learn certain facts about Chiado. This area had been named by António Ribeiro, a famous playwright and poet. Originally, he was a Franciscan monk but he later went to Lisbon and came to be known as 'Chiado'.

During the early part of the 20th century, Chiado was the perfect hub of literary people, where artists and writers came together on a regular basis. The cafes of Chiado, were the extraordinary centers of the culture and politics in the city.

Chiado reveals several historical buildings and is also reminiscent of fire of 1988, that destroyed the area. As gathered from the pages of history, a great fire started in a shop in Carmo Street on 25th August, 1988 and gradually spread to Garrett Street. However, an extensive renovation program has restored Chiado to
its former glory.

Enjoy Shopping in Chiado

Shopping in Chiado is one of the best activities in the quarter. Chiado is usually associated with the famous shopping street named Rua Garrett, located in the heart of the quarter. Rua Garrett has been named after Almeida Garrett, who was both an eminent writer as well as a politician. The Chiado quarter is regarded to be a very elegant and trendy shopping destination in Lisbon. It houses various fashion stores, which remind shoppers of the classy Parisian boutiques.

Chiado is also very well known for its superb street entertainment and a host of facilities. There are a number of restaurants, hotels, bookshops, theaters, museums and the renowned Portuguese fashion houses in Chiado. Café 'A Brasileira', is a wonderful hang out spot of art students in Lisbon.

Chiado in Lisbon is famous for its attractive shops, fashion stores and rich historical association with the past.
