The Catholic University of Portugal is the only non state university, run and managed by the Catholic Church of Portugal. It is referred to as Catolica or UCP in short. The four main regional centers of the Catholic University of Portugal are located in Beiras, Braga, Lisbon and Porto. The center at Lisbon is the headquarter of the university.
History of Catholic University of Portugal
This prestigious university was set up in the year, 1967 as par the 'Holy See' decree, which was passed on request at the Portuguese Bishop's conference and in adherence to the Concordat Law. Finally, it gained official recognition in the year 1971. Faculty of Philosophy was the first faculty of Catholic University of Portugal, which was opened in Braga, later on the university spread its branches by setting up the Faculty of Theology in Lisbon in 1968 followed by the Faculty of Human Sciences in 1971. Since the university was non-state run, the government of Portugal passed a decree law, which rated the university at par with the other Portuguese universities. The degrees conferred by this university, is given the same value as degrees conferred by other state universities in Portugal.
Degrees offered by the Catholic University of Portugal
Licentiate, Master and Doctorate are different degrees awarded by this University. Master and doctorate degrees are given to students pursuing post graduate and specialized courses. There are around 150 students pursuing their doctorate in various fields in this university. Recently, there has been an increase in students for post graduate courses.

executive training courses. The Faculty of Economics and Business Science, and Economics and Management and Law in Lisbon and Oporto are well known throughout Europe and are listed in Top 20 in Europe.
E Learning and distance learning courses have been recently introduced by this university for the convenience of the working students.
Faculties of Catholic University of Portugal
Currently UCP has 18 faculties, with 11,300 students and around 1,000 lecturers. The university offers around forty post graduate and masters courses. Business, economics, architecture,law, media, civil engineering and dental medicine are the best faculties of this university. Business and Economics faculty of this university is rated as the best in Portugal.
Libraries of Catholic University of Portugal
The Philosophy Faculty Library in Braga, the Paraiso Library in Porto and D Jose Pedro da Silva Library in Viseu and the John Paul II library and the Digital Scientific Library of Lisbon are the main libraries of the University. Libraries maintain a huge collection of books, periodicals and journals relating to various subjects, helping both the students and the faculty in the research activities.
