Bernardo Sassetti


Bernardo da Costa Sassetti Pais, popularly known as Bernardo Sassetti is a famous Portuguese pianist. Born in June 24 in the year 1970, he is known all over the world for his jazz music. In his career, Sasssetti has also written and composed music for well known films, which has earned him loads of accolades from all corners of the world. As a son of Sidonio de Freitas Branco Pais and Maria de Lourde de Macedo Sacchetti, Bernardo was the grand son of Sidonio Bernardino Cardoso Da Silva Pais, the 4th President and the 99th Prime Minister of Portugal. He was also the grand nephew of the famous composers Luis de Freitas Branco and Pedro de Freitas Branco. Beatriz Batarda a famous actress is the wife of Bernardo Sassetti.

As a child, Bernardo Sassetti was very passionate about classical music. At the tender age of nine Sassetti suddenly developed zeal to learn how to play piano. He attended a professional piano school 'Academia dos Amadores de Musica', where he learnt the skills of playing a piano. Bernardo Sassetti dedicated himself to playing Jazz music. Under the careful guidance of his mentors, Horace Parlan and Sir Roland Hanna he excelled in Jazz music. Sassetti started playing Jazz professionally, from 1988. Since
then, he has staged his performances in numerous musical concerts all over the world. He has even played piano in Guy Barkers 3rd CD with the prestigious London Philarmonic Orchestra and Sting. Bernardo Sasseti along with his trio had the honor of representing Portugal at the 1st European Jazz Festival in Athens in the year 2001.

Several albums of Bernardo Sassetti were released in both English and Portuguese. Well known celebrities from different countries have participated in Sassetti's albums. Some well known records of Bernardo Sassetti are Dundumbanza, Passagem, Ao vivo no Guinmaraes Jazz, Ecos de Africa, Sons do Brasil, Mundos and many more.

Very recently, Bernardo has also started composing film music. The world of cinema with its different imageries and myriad of colors has always fascinated Sassetti. His film music always retained the classic flavor of Jazz. Sasseti composed music for films like Alice, and he himself played piano for his compositions. Bernardo Sassetti's vivid imagination found its right expression in his film music.

Bernardo Sassetti, the great jazz pianist of all times was also nominated for the prestigious Mercury Awards in the year 1995.
