Baixa

Baixa is considered as the heart of the capital city of Lisbon. It is the principal area where most of the shops and banks are located. Baixa extends from the Tagus riverfront to the main avenue, known as Avenida da Liberdade.

Baixa is the major commercial center of Lisbon where the streets are named after the shopkeepers and craftsmen such as Rua da Prata (gold and silversmiths), Rua dos Douradores (Gilders' Street), Rua dos Sapateiros (Shoemakers' Street) or Rua Aurea and who were engaged in trade in that area.

The first urban planning was implemented in Europe at Baixa. The broad squares and pedestrian streets of Baxia are the characteristic features of the area. Baixa is a well-planned district, with shops, stately squares, pedestrianized streets and cafes.

There are many hotels in this main shopping and banking district, which are the first choice of business travelers in the city. Hotel Britania, Aparthotel VIP Eden,Hotel Marquês Pombal, Heritage Avenida da Liberdade, Hotel Britania, Hotel Mundial, Hotel
Metropole, Avenida Palace, Lisboa Plaza and Hotel Veneza are some of the hotels in Baixa, which serve as the best accommodation options in area. To savor the original traditional cuisine, one can visit the restaurants of Baixa like the Gambrinus, Terreiro do Paço and Eleven.

Santa Justa Elevator, Comercio Square and Rossio Square are among the three top sights of Baxia. Apart from these attractions, Baixa is adorned with numerous places of interest such as Rua Augusta, Figueira Square, Municipal Square, Rossio Station, Edward VII Park, Conceição Velha Church and São Domingos Church.

After the Great Earthquake of 1755, Baixa in Lisbon was reconstructed again with planned streets and neoclassical buildings. It is the finest example of neoclassical design and urban planning in Europe. Eugénio dos Santos, Manuel de Maia, and the Hungerian Carlos Mardel are the three main architects of the city who rebuilt the area. One's trip to the capital city is incomplete without visiting Baxia, the downtown of Lisbon, which is the main center of all business and financial activities.
