There are 3 important Lodz Universities that are owned by the state. Apart from the three universities, there are many other institutes that provide higher education in the city. To get into university level, the students have to attain the maturity certificate.
The Lodz Universities work with the objective to impart training to professionals so that they would be able to tackle creative artistic work or fundamental and applied research. In the universities of Lodz, the students learn to make positive use of scientific research.

The three universities owned by state in Lodz are:
- Technical University of Lodz: The creation of Technical University of Lodz took place in the year 1945. The university is one of the largest of its kind in Poland.
- University of Lodz: This University was established on 24th May, 1945. There were 6 faculties in the academic year of 1945/1946.
- Medical University of Lodz: This University was opened on 1st October, 2002 by merging Military Medical Academy and Medical Academy of Lodz. The University is the largest teaching hospital in Poland and also a premier research center of Europe.
