Paul Kletzki


Paul Kletzki was a well-known conductor and composer of Poland. He was born on 21st March, 1900. At the tender age of 15 years, he joined the Philharmonic Orchestra. He studied philosophy at the Warsaw University. In 1921 he moved to Berlin.

Composer Paul Kletzki was given the chance to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1925. As he belonged to the Jewish community, he left Germany in 1933. He went to Italy, but had to again move to Soviet Union in 1936 due to the anti-Semitism of the Italian Fascist regime. Finally he went to Switzerland due to the Great Terror of Stalin's regime.
His greatest composition is the 'Third Symphony' with a subtitle 'In memoriam', which he dedicated to the victims of Nazism. It was composed in October, 1939. His other notable works are a Fantasy for piano, a Sinfonietta for strings, a sonata for violin and piano and two string quartets. He became the chief conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in 1954. From 1958 to 1961, he served as the chief conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

He also worked as the General Music Director of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande from 1966 to 1970. It was on 5th March, 1973 that this renowned Polish composer breathed his last breath at Liverpool, UK.
