Medical University of Lodz was established on 1st October, 2002. It was founded by merging Military Medical Academy of Lodz and Medical Academy of Lodz. The University happens to be the largest hospital unit engaged in the work of teaching. The objectives of Medical University of Lodz include:
- Preparing candidates for research and teaching activities
- Education of students in medical science and preparing them for profession of pharmacist, medical analyst, physician or dentist
- Conducting scientific research activities
- Arrangement of postgraduate training
The first Rector of Medical University of Lodz was Professor Andrez Lewinski, MD, PhD. The authorities of the Medical University in Lodz have gradually developed its programs of teaching and there has been considerable improvement in the treatment methods.

Graduates below the age of 30 years can apply for the four-year postgraduate course offered by the Medical University. This University of Lodz has become one of the premier institutes of research in Poland. There is an English Language Medical Division, which has been set up in the faculty of Military Medicine. This division offers "Doctor of Medicine" or MD degree to the students.
