Arthur Rubinstein


Arthur Rubinstein was a popular pianist, who was born on 28th January, 1887 in Lodz. Rubinstein is considered to be one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. The Lodz born pianist hailed from a Jewish family. Arthur Rubinstein was of the view that music is meaningless till life is infused in it by a creative and concerned player. Music to him was null and void if it is without emotional expression.

Life of Arthur Rubinstein

Rubinstein started his studies in Piano in Polish capital of Warsaw. He went to Berlin during 1897 for further studies. Arthur Rubinstein gave his first performance in the year 1900 in Berlin.

He went to Paris in 1904 and met popular composers of the city. In 1906, the great pianist made his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York. He made tours to various European countries. In 1912, Rubinstein went to London and was there till 1914. In London, he got acquainted with musicians like Pierre Monteux, Pablo Casals, Jacques Thibaud, Stravinsky and Kochanski.

After his stay in London, the pianist started touring South America, Spain and United States giving performances. Rubinstein performed in various countries making the audiences spell bound with his piano skill. During this time, he developed keen interest for Hispanic music. He retired from stage in 1976 due to deterioration in health condition.

Career of Arthur Rubinstein

In his musical career, Rubinstein made live recordings with piano for American Piano Company and Aeolian Duo-Art system. He became the citizen of United States during the Second World War. After World War II, Rubinstein's popularity, among the people as a pianist, increased to a large extent.

Apart from being popular as a pianist, he was also popular as an outstanding chamber musician. He had performed with leading musicians like Jascha Heifetz, Gregor Piatigorsky and Henryk Szeryng and the members of Guarneri Quartet. Arthur Rubinstein had also recorded many romantic compositions.

Rubinstein had recorded for RCA Victor. Concertos, chambers and solo recordings were done by him with this company. The great performer and musician died on 20th December, 1982.

Honors and Awards of Arthur Rubinstein

Arthur Rubinstein had received many awards in his lifetime. In 1971, he won the Sonning Award. In 1976, he received U.S Medal of Freedom. Next year, he became the honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He had won Grammy Award for Best Performance in Chamber music and also Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (without orchestra). In 1994, Rubinstein received Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
