Andrzej Bartkowiak is a director and cinematographer. He was born in 1950 in Lodz, Poland. He was trained at Polish Film School. Andrzej Bartkowiak immigrated to United States of America in the year 1972. He started his career working for commercials. Bartkowiak is also a member of the American Society of Cinematographers.
In 1976, Andrzej Bartkowiak made his debut in "Deadly Hero" as a cinematographer. He tasted the fruit of fame when he shot about 100 locations in Manhattan for "Prince of the City" in 1981, which was his collaboration with Sidney Lumet. He worked with Lumet for 12 long years.
Bartkowiak has reputation for his unique urban compositions. He has equal talent in shooting in indoor locations. He has great sense of the usage of lights during shooting of movies. In 2000, he sat on the director's chair with the movie, "Romeo Must Die". In the same year, he was the director of photography in Roger Donaldson's "Thirteen Days".
