KRAKÓW

Kraków is one of largest cities of Poland. It is the capital of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. Earlier before the existence of the Polish state, it was the capital of Vistulans tribe. In the 10th century, the city became a major center of trade and was incorporated into the holdings of the Piast dynasty of Poland. In 1038, it became the seat of the Polish government. In the18th century, the Polish state was absorbed by Russia, the Austrian Habsburg Empire and Prussia and made it a part of the Austrian province of Galicia. The Congress of Vienna gave Kraków independence as the Free City of Kraków. It then turned out to be a Polish national symbol and a center of culture and art, entitled with "Polish Athens".



Area & Location:Lies on the Vistula River at the foot of Wawel Hill in the south of Little Poland, Kraków is located at 50°04' Latitude North and 19°57' Longitude East. The city, which occupies a total area of 326.8 sq. km has a population of 780,000 with a density of 2317. 93 per sq. km making it one of the largest cities of Poland.
