Ninoy Aquino International Airport


Ninoy Aquino International Airport is one of the international airheads of the city. Formerly, the airport was known as Manila International Airport. The airport was renamed in the year 1987 in order to honour Benigno Aquino, the junior. Ninoy Aquino International Airport enjoys high passenger density. It is ranked 59th in the world with respect to passenger traffic. There are three terminals at the airport for smooth functioning of the flights and passenger traffic.

The Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport is located 7 kilometers south of the city at the border between Paranaque City and Pasay City. Manila International Airport Authority maintains this international airport. The Airport is a branch of the Department of Transportation and Communications. Ninoy Aquino International Airport enjoys high passenger density. The airport is ranked 59th in the world with respect to passenger traffic.

History of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport

The present day Ninoy Aquino International Airport was formerly known as the Manila International Airport. It was renamed in the year 1987 in order to honour Benigno Aquino, the junior. The airport was constructed in the year 1937 on Nielson Field. However, in 1948, the airport was shifted to its present base, proximate to the Villamor Airbase. The original structure of the airport suffered damage due to fire in
the year 1981. A new building was built in order to replace the damaged building.

Airport Terminals

The airport contains three terminals. The proposal for building Terminal 1 was approved by the Asian Development bank in the year 1975. The terminal was completed in the year 1981. Terminal 1 of Ninoy Aquino International Airport was built to serve as a landing ground to the international flights, which are not operated by Philippines Airlines. Some of the international flights serving the Terminal are Asiana airlines, China Airlines, Air Macau, Emirates, Gulf Air, among others.

Terminal 2 was designed to serve international and domestic flights operated by Philippines Airlines and Air Philippines. This terminal has two wings namely the North Wing and the South Wing. The North Wing of the Terminal 2 are served by international flights while the South Wing is served by domestic flights.

Terminal 3 has been newly constructed in the premises of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. The construction of the terminal began in the year 1997 and was completed in the year 2006.

Manila Domestic Passenger Terminal is another terminal, which is designed to serve as a base to the domestic flights of Philippines not operated by the Philippine airlines.
