About the De la Salle University of Manila
De la Salle University in Manila promotes sense of responsibility and cooperativeness among the students. In the initial years, the University was a school where education was imparted in Spanish. This was so because the brothers were of Spanish origin. The premier Philippine educational institution started as a school. The highest qualification granted by the institution at that time was a three year commercial secondary school program. In 1917, the school attained the power to grant Associate in Arts Degree. Gradually, it also started granting bachelor and master degrees in science, arts and commerce streams. However, during the Second World War, the University campus was seized by the Japanese soldiers and became the defense headquarters of the Japanese Imperial Army. The infrastructure of the University like the library, gymnasium and the laboratory was destroyed due to the repeated bombings during the World War II. The De la Salle Brothers were killed and some were taken as prisoners. However, at the end of the war, the brothers were brought back and the University was restored. After the post Second World War period, commercial courses were opened at the University. Finally, on 19th February, 1975 this educational institution attained the status of University.
