Corregidor Island



Corregidor Island is a small island situated 48 kilometers way from Manila. This rocky island bears a rich historical past. The island can be reached by a small boat ride as it lies west of Manila.
The Manila Corregidor Island had been the stronghold of the American and Filipino defenders during the Second World War. The Filipino and the American soldiers fought bravely against the Japanese infiltrator during the World War II. Tours from Manila to the Corregidor Island are conducted regularly.

History of the Corregidor Island
The Manila Corregidor Island is also known as 'the Rock'. The island was the stronghold of the Allies. Corregidor Island was the seat of the Philippine Commonwealth Government and also the headquarters of the Allied forces. During Japanese invasion in the Second World War, the Allied forces conducted their military operations from this rocky island. However in 1942, April 9, Bataan fell and the Allied forces were forced to surrender the island to the Japanese Imperial Army, which was under the command of the then general, Lt.General Homma Masaharu. In 1945, under the command of General Mac Arthur, the island was recaptured from the Japanese Imperial Army.
