Ateneo de Manila University


The Ateneo de Manila University is one of the most reputed universities in Manila, capital city of Philippines. The university dates back to 1859 when three Jesuit priests took over the Escuela Municipal, which was a small school for the Spanish people. However it developed into an institution imparting secondary education to the students in the year 1865. In 1901, the term municipal was dropped from the name of the institution and it began to be called the Ateneo de Manila. The university works with a motto ‘Lux in Domino’, which means ‘Light in the Lord’.

Several developments and changes took place in the institution over the years and it was in 1959 that the institute was declared as a university. The Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines is subdivided into many schools that impart quality learning and teaching facilities to the students enrolled in the university. The various schools are as follows:
  • Ateneo Grade School: An integral part of the Ateneo de Manila University, this is a boys school with a total strength of about 4000 students. This school has its own set of rules and laws and is controlled and administered by the Headmaster, who is the chief executive of the school.

  • Ateneo High School: The high school of the university provides world-class facilities and services to the students of the school. These facilities help in the enhancement of education and create a dynamic academic environment in the school. Hi-tech facilities are used in the high school campus.

  • The Loyola Schools: The Loyola Schools in Ateneo de Manila University of Philippines offer undergraduate and degree programs to the students in various subjects related to Science and Arts disciplines. The major schools that are a part of the Loyola Schools are the School of Social Sciences, the School of Science and Engineering, the School of Humanities and the John Gokongwei School of Management.

  • The Professional Schools: There are many professional schools that are operated by the Ateneo de Manila University at Philippines. The major professional schools are the Law School, the Graduate School of Business, the School of Medicine and Public Health and the School of Government.
Apart from the undergraduate and graduate degree programs, the Ateneo de Manila University in Philippines also offers many non-degree and International programs to the students. There are also wonderful research facilities that are provided at the University. There are the Board of Trustees, who establish certain auxiliary units related to research and development in the university. The Rizal Library in the Ateneo de Manila University of Philippines has a rich collection of books and journals that can be accessed by the students of the university. The library is well organized and also has many audio-visual equipments that help in the learning process. Apart from these, students can also avail various online resources in the library. The university has many other facilities for the students, which include clinics, retreat houses, conference venues, art galleries, theaters and many more. There is also a sports complex in the university campus.
