The Ateneo de Manila University is one of the most reputed universities in Manila, capital city of Philippines. The university dates back to 1859 when three Jesuit priests took over the Escuela Municipal, which was a small school for the Spanish people. However it developed into an institution imparting secondary education to the students in the year 1865. In 1901, the term municipal was dropped from the name of the institution and it began to be called the Ateneo de Manila.
