Roman Kintanar


Roman Kintanar who was a renowned scientist, was born in Cebu City on 13th June, 1929. The scientist had worked in the area of meteorology. Roman Kintanar started his career as an observer of weather in the year 1948.

Life of Roman Kintanar

Kintanar completed Bachelor of Science from University of Philippines in Physics in the year 1951. After that, he went on to complete Ph.D. from the University of Texas. Later, Roman Kintanar became the director of Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration(PAGASA). He was the youngest person to hold such a post in the service of Filipino government.

Roman Kintanar was appointed as the third Vice-President of UN World Meteorological Organization (WTO), while serving as the chief of PAGASA . In 1978, he became the President of WTO and again served in the same position for a term of four years from 1983.

Achievement of Roman Kintanar

An asteroid was named after Roman Lucero Kintanar. This was done to pay reverence for his contribution in the field of science and meteorology. The asteroid is circling between the orbits of Jupiter and Mars.
On 6th May, 2007, Kintanar died of cancer in his Quezon City home.

The Astronomical League of the Philippines suggested the name of the asteroid to International Astronomical Union to recognize the scientist's countless contributions and services to the modernization of weather forecasting in the country. At present, the asteroid 6636 Kintanar is at a distance of 261 million kilometers from Earth.

In his professional life, Roman Kintanar received various honors and awards, which included:

2007: Philippine Legion of Honor with the Rank of Grand Officer (Marangal na Pinuno) for his work in various international cooperation for tropical cyclone and earthquake disaster mitigation programs

1996: Presidential Citation Award by then President Fidel V. Ramos

1981: Public Service Award, Office of the President

1980: Lingkod Bayan Award, Career Executive Service Board

1978: Parangal ng PAGASA award
