Bloody struggle for independence followed. It gained sovereignty on March 24, 1934, which was recognized on July 4, 1946. Republic of Philippines is a President-led country.

The President attains power for 6-years term via general suffrage. The Senate and the House of Representatives form the legislative wing of Philippines. The Supreme Court is the highest judicial bench of Philippines. Other special courts and regular courts also constitute the pillars of law. Philippines has 81 provinces. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is the current President of the Republic of the Philippines.
