LIMA

Lima is the capital of Peru. The city was founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro on January 18, 1535. Its name has been derived from the Aymara word lima-limaq, which means 'yellow flower'. The city also holds the title 'The City of Kings'. It is the core of the Lima Metropolitan Area, which is regarded as one of the ten largest metropolitan areas in the Americas. It is also the capital of Lima Province and the cultural, industrial, financial and transport hub of Peru.



Area & Location: Lies close to the valleys of the Chillón, Rímac and Lurín rivers, Lima covers total area of 804.3 sq. km. The one-third of the country's population lives in the metropolitan area of Lima, making it the largest city in the country. It has a population of 6,872,766 and its metropolitan area is home to 8,187,398 of its inhabitants.

Tourist Attractions: The city of Lima, which has a number of cultural, recreational and entertainment centers is a popular tourist destination.

Transportation: Lima is the transport hub of the country. Jorge Chávez International Airport is the main airport in the city that serves as gateway to the country from other parts of the world. The city has a bus system that links all the regions. Taxis, inter-urban bus are the means of public transport in the city. The construction of Lima Metro and an aboveground mass-transit system are on the anvil.

The monumental Plaza Mayor, Presidential Palace, the catacombs of the Convento de San Francisco and the Lima City Walls are the important monuments in the city. The city also possesses a number of museums that preserve the historical artifacts of the city. National Museum of Anthropology, Archaeology, and History and the Rafael Larco Herrera Archaeological Museum, the Gold Museum, textile museum and arms museum that display a huge range of antique Spanish firearms are some of them. The Palomino Islands that houses sea lions is well known. Ancon, Barranquito, Aguadulce, Los Pavos, Las Cascadas, Las Sombrillas and Costa Linda are the various beaches and waterfronts in the city that are popular with visitors.
